Obsidian Announces 40Gbits/s InfiniBand Range Extenders Delivering High-Performance Disaster Tolerance for IBM DB2 pureScale Clusters

Longbow C400 enables QDR stretched clusters over WDM networks

Las Vegas, NV – October 18, 2012 – As technology partners with IBM in delivering business continuity solutions for high performance synchronously distributed databases, Obsidian has chosen the Information On Demand event to launch its next generation Longbow device, the C400.

IBM's pureScale is a clustered DB2 implementation that leverages InfiniBand LAN technology to scale out from small to very large server node counts at a single site while maintaining high transaction rates and fault tolerance. However, until GDPC (Geo-Dispersed PureScale Cluster) DB2 configurations using Obsidian's Longbow technology were released, pureScale was confined to a single location – vulnerable to single-site failures. Longbows transparently extend the cluster's InfiniBand fabric over tens of miles, allowing a single InfiniBand cluster to be physically dispersed across remote sites - while still functioning as a synchronous, active:active mirror. In normal operation both sites are concurrently active, relying on Longbow connectivity to maintain storage and metadata coherence. In the event of a site failure, traffic automatically fails over to the surviving site, and fails back when services are restored.

Obsidian's 100-series Longbow products are based on 10Gbits/s WAN interfaces, running at 4X Single Data Rate (SDR) InfiniBand LAN speeds. At IOD, Obsidian is launching the Longbow C400, which operates at 4X Quad Data Rate (QDR) InfiniBand speeds over up to four aggregated 10Gbits/s WAN channels using Wavelength Division Multiplex (WDM) technology across a single fiber pair.
