Large-Scale Data Migration Study Concludes: Obsidian Longbow Router was the Fastest Transport Mechanism Evaluated

Even in AES Encryption Mode while Alternatives ran without Network Security

Reston, VA - May 11, 2011: Obsidian Strategics™, the leader in InfiniBand range extension and creator of wide-area Longbow™ technology, is pleased to announce very favourable results for their Longbow E100 devices and dsync+™ file transport tool in extensive third-party evaluations.

A recently completed study by the DICE Alliance (Data Intensive Compute Environment), involved multiple 10GbEthernet WAN connections made over a geographically dispersed demonstration network connecting high-performance servers and storage systems:

"In this work, we conducted experiments on the DICE program's test bed to evaluate the actual performance of Obsidian Longbow Routing on state-of-the-art InfiniBand clusters," said Dhabaleswar K. Panda, leader of the Network Based Computing Lab at Ohio State University (OSU). "We used Obsidian Longbow routers to connect two InfiniBand compute clusters, varied the routing ports latency to emulate the effects of different physical distances between the two clusters and evaluated the performance of Obsidian Longbow InfiniBand routers under different workloads, either with or without the hardware encryption feature enabled."

The study included a Research Sandbox (System Area Network Demonstration) project conducted at the Supercomputing 2010 conference held November 16-18 in New Orleans, where more than 15 government, academic and HPC collaborators tested a variety of file movement technologies over a cross-country network architecture supported by Obsidian Longbow products.

"The research team's use of the Obsidian Longbow as the anchor technology proved to be a wise choice," said Al Stutz, Avetec CIO and co-leader of the DICE program. "In all the tests we ran, the Longbow product met or exceeded expectations and unlike older technologies, there was no performance impact when encryption was enabled."

The OSU and SCinet Sandbox reports are available at diceprogram.org/reports/.

About Obsidian Strategics:
Obsidian Strategics™ is the developer of Longbow™, a series of InfiniBand products featuring range extension, routing and encryption. Longbow technology allows an InfiniBand fabric, normally a short-range network used in high-performance computing, to be extended via optical fiber over varying distances. Longbow connects across Campus, Metro or Global networks to enable unparalleled real-time backup over long-distance, high-bandwidth video transmission and efficient movement of large data sets to compute and storage resources. www.obsidianstrategics.com.
