Obsidian Longbow devices deployed in high frequency trading systems
Edmonton, Canada (June 2009) — Obsidian is pleased to report several recent Longbow design wins accelerating overall performance in high-frequency trading environments, delivering uncompromising native InfiniBand connectivity within and between data centers at record-low latencies.
While InfiniBand technology is well established in the Financial Services Industry as a means of accelerating the compute side of low-latency trading systems, it has — until now — been limited to very short-reach standard InfiniBand links within clusters of servers. Obsidian's Longbow C and X series devices seamlessly extend the protocol over 10's to many 1000's of km respectively using standard optical cables or 10 Gbits/s WAN transports. Longbows now allow InfiniBand to accelerate the networking as well as compute phases of the latency-sensitive lifetime of a trade event.
As fully IBTA and OFA certified compliant InfiniBand switches, the two-ported Longbows hide the optical WAN connections from the standard InfiniBand fabrics, allowing remote offices to interact seamlessly across great distance. Longbows offer sub-microsecond insertion latencies - equivalent to just 200m of fiber propagation time — changing the rules for proximity-based co-location centers and geo-distributed multi-office environments.
Longbow connections preserve all of InfiniBand's highly desirable characteristics, including minimal CPU loading (RDMA), optimally low latency, sustained wire-rate throughput, lossless flow control and minimal latency jitter — all with reliable transport semantics. The lack of packet drop and jitter are especially attractive for high-frequency trading applications.
Over and above transparent range-extension, the Longbow family includes native InfiniBand routing and integrated AES cryptography functions, without impacting throughput or insertion latencies.
