Obsidian Strategics Launches Longbow C Series Products
AUSTIN, TEXAS — November 17th, 2008: Obsidian Strategics, the leader in InfiniBand range extension and creators of wide-area Longbow technology, today announced the launch of its new Longbow C Series products, aimed at high-performance campus and metro area network applications. InfiniBand's latency and bandwidth performance advantages are well understood in the High Performance Computing (HPC) world, but until now it has not been possible to apply these benefits outside of the machine room or data center.
"Since 2005, Obsidian has been delivering ultra wide area InfiniBand equipment to the defense and intelligence communities. It was recognized that there was value in packaging that same technology into platforms optimized for direct lightpath connections, either over dark fiber or via Wavelength Division Multiplex (WDM) equipment.", says Dr. David Southwell, President of Obsidian Strategics. "The new Longbow C Series provides the same transparency and bandwidth efficiency as the original X Series Longbows, but the shorter campus and metro area connections also highlight Longbow's excellent latency performance."
The initial Longbow C Series line-up is flexible, comprising models optimized for network links of up to 300m, 2km, 10km or 40km. A fifth model is specifically targeted for use with WDM equipment. By connecting InfiniBand fabrics as two-port switches, Longbow C Series devices are trivial to install. Device latency is just 840 nanoseconds, yielding, for example, a switch-to-switch latency over a mile-long optical path of under 10 microseconds. No hardware, software or management system modifications are required to deploy the technology.
"Latency performance is the real story here.", explains Dr. Southwell, "Using Longbow C Series devices, it is possible to transparently connect buildings several miles apart with a total link latency less than that required to navigate through a single typical 10 Gigabit Ethernet switch. This is very powerful, and opens up many exciting possibilities."

- Location-agnostic high-performance Storage Area Networks (SANs) — especially solid-state storage
- High fidelity remote visualization
- High bandwidth data source interconnect (MRI, gene sequencers)
- Clustering of clusters to deliver efficient campus or metro-area grid computing
- Latency-sensitive messaging (high-frequency trading systems)
