Obsidian Re-Brands to Obsidian Strategics and Launches Washington D.C.-based Obsidian Federal

November 8, 2007 — Obsidian, the leader in InfiniBand range extension and creators of the Longbow series of products, today announced a corporate reorganization aimed at accelerating market fulfillment and corporate growth.

Obsidian Research Corporation (product development, support) and Obsidian Longbow Limited Partnership (business development, finance) have joined forces, uniting under the corporate banner "Obsidian Strategics, Inc." "The move to Obsidian Strategics marks our transition from developers of an enabling core technology to a valued partner in world-changing HPC solutions. Our door is open to industry partners prepared to embrace the future," said Bill Halina, VP Business Development.

Dr. David Southwell, President and CEO of Obsidian Strategics, commented on the momentum that has already been established and the company's vision: "In less than three years, this team has delivered on three World Firsts--native InfiniBand range-extension, routing and encryption. The formation of Obsidian Strategics underscores our continuing commitment to enrich the InfiniBand eco-system for the benefit of HPC and military/intelligence communities alike, from users of single-rack clusters to global information grids. Obsidian Strategics plans to aggressively accelerate InfiniBand's growth by developing and supporting families of high performance customer-enabling products."

In a supporting development, Obsidian Strategics is pleased to announce the formation of a Washington D.C.-based subsidiary "Obsidian Federal, LLC" to work with system integrators and channel partners to meet the demanding needs of the US federal, intelligence and defense market spaces. Obsidian Federal is led by newly appointed Mr. Paul Richards, who moves to Obsidian Federal from Rackable Systems Inc., bringing with him a track record of more than 25 years of successful Federal sales in the D.C. area. While holding senior sales positions in organizations such as Epson, Hewlett-Packard, NetApp, Unisys and Rackable, Mr. Richards has consistently specialized in supporting high performance equipment procurement by the DoD and intelligence communities.

"The entire Obsidian team is very excited to be bringing a person of Paul's caliber into the organization," said Dr. David Southwell. "He is well-placed to ensure our products get into the hands of end users in mission-critical military and intelligence applications."

For his part, Mr. Richards is also highly enthusiastic about the opportunity. "DoD initiatives around Network Centric warfare and the need to transport extremely large data sets in support of these initiatives represents a tremendous opportunity for Obsidian solutions. I believe this market trend, coupled with the continued rapid adoption of InfiniBand, will drive the need for InfiniBand based range-extension, routing and encryption solutions offered by Obsidian. Furthermore, by setting up federal operations in the Washington D.C. area, Obsidian will be well positioned to work with and support major Federal contractors that specialize in net-centric and HPC solutions targeted at the DoD and IC community."
